Although alarm fatigue is a recognized problem that hospitals are trying to address, little has been done to evaluate the combined impact of all the alarms, alerts, and notifications that clinicians must respond to and the impact those disruptions have on patient care and safety, overall noise levels, and patient and staff satisfaction. ECRI1 has identified this issue as one of its Top 10 Technology Hazards for 2020 due to concern these disruptions have on cognitive load and desensitization that could lead to an adverse patient outcome. This session will share an implemented strategy based on best practices to assess and reduce overall alarm, alert, and notification load, along with the impact of the changes and lessons learned.
